"No extra-base hits"...LG's batting explosion
The LG Twins bats hit three home runs to dominate Samsung Lions Park in Daegu, South Korea.
LG won 8-2 in the final game of a three-game midweek series against Samsung in the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League on Friday at Samsung Lions Park. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak and snapped a slump. Their season record is 14 wins, 2 draws, and 13 losses.
A day earlier (Sept. 24 at Samsung Electronics in Daegu), LG was held to one hit and suffered a humiliating 0-6 defeat. A day later, the bats exploded for 16 hits, including three home runs, to secure an 8-2 victory.
Oh Ji-hwan (second inning), Kim Hyun-soo (seventh inning), and Park Hae-min (ninth inning) hit home runs. Oh led the offense with a solo shot (his first of the season), Kim hit a three-run home run (his fourth of the season), and Park hit a solo home run (his first of the season). Kim Hyun-soo, in particular, had five hits in five at-bats. It was the most hits in a single game since August 4, 2009 against the Masan Lotte Giants. The team's bats turned the tide with a home run in the middle of a slump, breaking the opponent's will to chase.
Starting pitcher Choi Won-tae was also impressive. He pitched six innings of two-hit ball with three strikeouts and two walks to earn a quality start (three earned runs or less in six starts) and set the stage for the victory. Kim Jin-sung then gave up a two-run homer to Ryu Ji-hyuk in the first inning, but Kim Yoo-young pitched two scoreless innings of relief to preserve the win.
LG manager Yeom Kyung-yup said after the game, "(Choi) Won-tae pitched well, throwing his changeup well to break the losing streak. At the 바카라 plate, Oh Ji-hwan was able to bring the game to life with a grand slam, and with no outs, (Kim) Hyun-soo and (Park) Hae-min were able to bring the game back with home runs. We were able to win thanks to the fans who traveled a long way and gave us passionate support. We are grateful to them," said Kim after the victory.
Meanwhile, LG has named Kim Yoon-sik as the starting pitcher for the first game of a three-game weekend series against the KIA Tigers at Jamsil Stadium on Saturday. Kim Yun-sik is coming off an injury and getting his feet wet in the Futures League. He was called up to the first team on June 26 and will be ready to make his first first-team start of the season.
On the other hand, the reigning KBO champions KIA will start James Nail, who has been dominating the league. Kia has won three straight games and reached 20 wins in 27 games, the fastest 20-win season in franchise history. Nail is 4-0 with a 1.14 ERA in five games and 31⅔ innings this year, with all but one of his starts (against the Hanwha Eagles in Daejeon on April 14) being quality starts.
The first game of the three-game weekend series between LG and KIA will take place at 18:30 on the 26th at Jamsil Stadium. Currently, LG is in fifth place in the league (14 wins, 2 draws, and 13 losses), while KIA is at the top of the league (20 wins, 7 losses).
